What Happens During Your First Massage?

A calm step-by-step guide for first-time clients who want to know exactly what to expect.

Quick answer

Your first massage should feel relaxed, respectful and unhurried. Emma will bring the equipment, explain the treatment, discuss any preferences, use professional towel draping for privacy, and adjust the massage pressure to suit your comfort.

Before Emma arrives

You do not need to create a salon at home. A clear, comfortable space is usually enough. Emma brings the professional setup needed for the treatment, including the massage table and towels.

If you have a preferred room, that is helpful, but it does not need to be perfect. Many clients simply choose the quietest or warmest room in the house.

A short consultation first

Before the treatment begins, Emma will check the treatment you have booked, ask about any relevant health information and discuss what you would like from the massage.

This is also the time to mention allergies, sensitivities, areas you would prefer to avoid, or whether you like lighter or firmer pressure.

Emma’s Advice

If it is your first massage, please do not worry about asking questions. I would much rather explain something clearly than have you feel unsure.

Setting up the treatment space

Emma will set up the massage table and create a calm environment. Quiet spa-style music is usually played, and lightly scented oils are normally used unless you prefer otherwise.

The goal is to make the space feel peaceful without making you feel like you have to prepare anything special.

Privacy, towels and comfort

Professional towel draping is used throughout the treatment. This means you are kept covered, warm and comfortable, with only the area being worked on uncovered at the appropriate time.

You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable before and after the treatment. Emma will explain everything clearly before you get ready.

From Emma’s Treatment Room

Clients often feel much more relaxed once they realise the treatment is simple, private and respectful. My priority is always that you feel comfortable.

During the massage

During the treatment you can talk, stay quiet, close your eyes or simply relax. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy a massage.

If you would like the pressure changed, the music lowered, more warmth or an area avoided, you can say so at any point. Your comfort comes first.

After the treatment

When the massage has finished, you will be given a moment to get up slowly. Most clients like to take their time afterwards rather than rushing back into the day.

It is sensible to drink some water, avoid rushing straight into anything too hectic, and enjoy the relaxed feeling for as long as possible.

Questions clients often ask

Do I need to provide towels?

No. Emma brings towels and the professional setup needed for the appointment.

Can I ask questions before the treatment starts?

Yes. You are welcome to ask anything before or during the appointment.

What if I feel nervous?

That is very normal for a first massage. Emma will explain everything clearly and make sure you feel comfortable.

Can I talk during the massage?

Yes. Some clients chat, while others prefer quiet. Either is fine.

What if I fall asleep?

That is absolutely fine and often just means you feel relaxed.

Can I stop the massage?

Yes. You can ask to pause or stop at any time.

Still have a question?

If you are unsure about anything before booking, you are always welcome to message Emma. This is especially helpful if it is your first treatment, you feel nervous, or you want to check whether a particular treatment is suitable for you.
